An update from Chair of The Greig Hall Working Group, 6th Sep 2021

Work has now started on the roof to make it weather tight for winter. The work involves replacing broken tiles, repairing the gutters, fixing the burnt areas on the roof (yes, someone was having a barbecue up there), replacing the rubber roof, replacing coping stones and blocking off the skylights which were damaged beyond repair by having coping stones thrown through them.

Unfortunately, but unsurprisingly, dry rot has been found in the support woodwork of the right hand wing. This means additional work and of course cost. The upside is that we have a window of fair weather to complete the work. A shout out for RJC Construction who are doing the roof work for us. The iconic portico, as you enter the hall, has suffered badly from leaks and requires specialist repair. Our sincere thanks go to Church Street Properties who have kindly given us a grant to cover the costs which will be over £6000.

Fundraising is continuing. The latest good news is that we heard this week a bid for CIL (Community Infrastructure Funding) funding submitted by our Clerk, Vanessa, was successful and we were granted £50,000 at SDC cabinet on the 6th September. This is a very welcome boost to our coffers.

I am continually amazed by our fantastic volunteers who are fundraising for us and especially Eileen at the Unionist Club for raising £275 at a quiz evening. Thank you.

Continuing on fundraising, here are a couple of dates for your diary. On the 18th September there will be a craft fair and coffee morning at the Eric Payne Centre from 10am to 1pm. The next event is at the Greig Hall on the 4th December. This will be a Christmas themed table top craft fair, Santa’s Grotto for the kids and entertainment and hot food outside. This is a post pandemic ‘welcome back’ event part funded by SDC. As soon as we have more details we will pass them on but suffice it to say it will be a great day. As this is to help fund the repairs and replacement of the heating system, I suggest you bring a coat!

Although the restoration work is progressing well, it has to be done in a safe manner. We need to be fully aware of health and safety and, for the construction work, CDM (Construction and Design Management). This is quite an administrative overhead for us but fortunately we have a volunteer who just happens to be qualified in CDM! Much appreciated Roger

We are also now a charity! Thanks to Vanessa, the application was accepted by the charity commission. The charity, a CIO, (Charitable Incorporated Organisation) will become the management vehicle for the hall into the future. It also allows us to go out for grant funding that would otherwise be unavailable to us.

Finally thank you to everyone who filled in the recent survey. There was overwhelming support for reopening the Greig Hall with some very interesting ideas on what events to hold when it is fully open. A report on the survey will be posted here on the website shortly.

As we want the restoration process, and how we spend your money, to be as transparent and open as possible, the minutes of the Greig Hall Working Group are posted on the Town Council website. Please have a look to see just what is happening to your hall and all the work going into it!
